Openoffice.org trouble

Hi, I've just downloaded openoffice, and will be using it with NVDA and Jaws 8. So far, the installation was fine, but when I open the application, I get a message which is not being read properly by either screen reader. I know the application is somewhat accessible, so, what am I not doing, and need to do? Jaws reads the message, but cannot interact with it other than with the jaws cursor. NVDA only reads the title of the message box.

Thanks...

OpenOffice is a free and open source office suite. It can open most MS word documents, powerpoint slides and spreadsheets; as wel as other types of text documents from other word programs.

You can get the free download at www.openoffice.org

Hi,

You will need sighted assistance to get past the welcome screen. When you get to opening an app, go to tools, options. You are now in a treeview. Press a until you here accessibility, then press tab. This is a checkbox. Press spacebar to check it and enter to close the dialog. Now restart the application. You will need the java access bridge if you don't already have it. You can get it from sun.com.

HTH!

Yes, the tool with which you need to enable accessibility is not accessable. Well, I could do it with the mouse curser and Wineyes. Once support for assistive technology is enabled, running any open office app with NVDA is accessable. This is assuming the Java Access Bridge is installed, as mentioned above. In my brief tour of Open Office with JFW, I find that, even with the access bridge, JFW doesn't give much access, especially to Calc (the spreadsheet). NVDA gives access to the spreadsheet, word processor, and database, as far as I know. I haven't yet done anything with the presentation app. One bit of information not exposed to NVDA, however, is the font attribute info in either a document or spreadsheet. Also, in the spreadsheet, I find no way to tell whether the value in a given cell is the result of a formula or is a constant. What am I missing?

You can get past the welcome screeen with JAWS. I found a shortcur or actually, someone else did.
Use the left mouse button to click the Next buton on the first screen.
Then, once you get to the license agreement, press ctlr page down a few times. Then click the finish button. Bingo! I was also able to enable the accessibility tool using jAWS 9 and I have the JAVA Access Bridge installed.

About a day ago, there was another post asking for Open Office help, and I thought it would be good to revive this board in case anyone else is interested.
